A Child Murdered: Justice for Trayvon Martin

To Whom It May Concern,

I am writing this letter to inform you of the gross negligence of the officers that handled the Trayvon Martin case. I am also detailing the circumstances surrounding the murder of a defenseless child. Please look into this case on the basis of several very important facts:

• Officers took Zimmerman for his word when he said that he shot Trayvon in “self-defense”

• Officers did not arrest Zimmerman

• Officers did not administer a drug or alcohol test

• Officers did not run a background check

A defenseless child is dead at the hands of an adult. This case should not be handled with perfunctory. This is a crime against a defenseless child. This appears to be a case of vigilante justice and police ineptitude, which means that your child or any child for that matter regardless of race or class can become a victim of violence and murder at the hands of a citizen acting as officer, judge and jury. This also means that in such a case (or any other) police officer incompetence can totally undermine an investigation and due process allowing a murderer to walk the streets and kill again.

Moments before this young child, Trayvon Martin, was murdered he was on a phone call with a 16 year old girl. She recounted that when Trayvon told her someone was following him she said to him: RUN! It appears that Zimmerman was the predator in this situation and Trayvon the prey. He was essentially running for his life. Zimmerman a 28 year old MAN, with a man’s strength, a loaded gun, and clearly in a questionable state of mind (as heard on the dispatcher’s phone call), pursued a child who merely had a cell phone, skittles and iced tea in his possession. George Zimmerman shot a defenseless child in cold blood as he screamed out HELP! It sounds like a nightmare.

Sanford Police Chief Billy Lee said that there is no evidence to dispute Zimmerman’s assertion that he shot Martin out of self-defense. There isn’t any evidence to prove Zimmerman’s assertion of “self-defense”. To support the claim of cold blooded murder and vigilante justice is a tape of Zimmerman talking to a dispatcher while in pursuit of Trayvon. How can he claim self-defense after he pursued and shot a child? It sounds as if he was hunting this defenseless child. No doubt the defenseless child was the one trying to defend himself from the predatory adult.

Zimmerman was imploring the very familiar and unjust method of vigilante justice. Again, how is it self-defense when you (a citizen) chose to pursue a child under the presumption that a crime is about to be committed? It appears that in his pursuit of what he perceived to be a criminal (having no fact to support this) he miscalculated the strength of a young boy trying to fight for his life. In that case, he defended himself but only after a child was trying to fight off an adult with a gun. Please look into the details of this case and send a message out to adults that you CAN NOT murder children in cold blood. Send a message out to those who may be convinced that vigilante justice is “justice”, that it will not be tolerated as it undermines our democracy and justice system. When armed citizens are allowed to act with police powers we are all in grave danger.
